Mildred Delores Jeter and Richard Perry Loving married in June 1958 in DC because the laws of Virginia, their home state, considered marriage between blacks and whites to be against the law. It took nine years for Loving v. Virginia to garner US Supreme Court's favor and overturn the Virginia conviction against the Lovings. They had three children, Donald, Peggy, and Sidney.
Though the official day celebrating Loving v. Virginia is in June, I felt it appropriate to publish this post on a day that is celebrated by all as a Loving Day.
